Coastal Otago & Dunedin
The coastal areas of Otago and Waitaki offer a distinct South Island lifestyle and an alternative to more heavily populated northern areas. Featuring stunning scenery, Otago offers mountains, vast plains, dramatic rivers and remote beaches. Dunedin, the ‘Edinburgh of the South’ has an internationally recognised university which hosts New Zealand’s principal medical school.
The Waitaki District is surrounded by natural beauty. It is a haven for wildlife including Oamaru Blue and Yellow-Eyed Penguin colonies, shags, seals, and an abundance of birdlife. Oamaru township features elegant 19th century architecture, calls itself the Steampunk capital of New Zealand, and is the finishing point of the Alps 2 Ocean cycle way—a 300km journey from the mountains to the sea.
